In a bay of the Cotton Fire Department, a group of 30 believers met for the first time with the purpose of establishing a church in the western part of Fayetteville. Six months later, on the first Sunday of January 1994, the West Fayetteville Baptist Church was organized with 52 charter members as Pastor Tony Wilson as Lead Pastor. For over a year, the Sunshine Center of Hope Mills served as the meeting place. This required that all nursery equipment, sound system, hymn books, keyboard, etc. be stored in vans and car trunks during the week and unloaded each Sunday.
A storefront building on Raeford Road was renovated in November of 1994 and became our worship center. The VFW allowed us the use of their Bingo Hall next door which provided space for Bible Study classes, Children’s Church, and fellowship.
Through the generosity of John D. Gillis, God provided three acres of land where our first building was erected and dedicated on March 7, 1999. Additional space was needed before long and modular buildings were added in 2001 and 2003. To continue ministering to the growing congregation, multiple services and Sunday Schools were added in 2003.
On Father’s Day of 2006, we broke ground on the new Worship Center. To God’s glory, it was dedicated on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
Again in 2013, God provided an additional 1.57 acres through the generosity of John D. Gillis.
After 20 years of service in March 2015 Pastor Tony Wilson retired. Dr. Steve Swann came to serve as lead pastor in October 2015.
